DEFINITIONS:
Different dictionaries have different kinds of definition
First of all we dealt with the definitions of the words:
- to explain
- to define
explain ⇒ 'why?' is something like this. You are suppossed to give an specific description.
define ⇒ 'what?' is the meaning of something. You are suppossed to give a statement of the exact meaning of a word.
Two different kinds of dictionary:
- semasiological ⇒ reader's dictionary, decoding.
⇒ you are looking for the meaning of a word
⇒ e.g. eddy: a circular movement of water, dust etc
- onomasiological ⇒ writer's dictionary, encoding
⇒ you are looking for a specific word. You already know
its meaning. (synonym)
⇒ e.g. a motion in a continued circle: eddy, whirl, vortex
Meanings of dictionaries - information
- information of metadata
⇒when and where was it published?
⇒who is the editor?
- information of dictionary entries:
⇒FORM: e.g. phonetic spelling
⇒STRUCTURE: e.g. construction of words ( noun, adjective, verb etc.)
⇒CONTENT: e.g. -statement of the exact meaning

Basic types of definition
- a standard dictionary definition is based on:
Definitio per genus proximum (Z) et differentia specifica (Y)
which means: definition by nearest kind and specific differences
X is a Ykind of Z

- taxonomy: hierachy of genus proxima
